Coins and Medals

The Cabinet of Coins and Medals was established in 1956 and it contains approximately 30,000 items. It is dedicated to collecting, presenting and publishing banknotes, medals, medals, plaques and insignia. The commitment to collecting materials originating from the city's territory makes this museum collection a valuable source of original materials for the study of Belgrade's long history. The collection contains ancient Greek, Celtic, Roman Republican and Imperial coins, Byzantine, medieval Serbian and Ottoman pieces of money, as well as several money hoards from European countries and cities from between the 16th and 18th centuries. The collection also includes examples of 48 distinct Ottoman and European currencies from the 19th century, i.e. from the period preceding the emergence of the national currency of the Principality of Serbia in 1868. A special part of the collection is dedicated orders, medals, plaques and insignia, which outline the political and cultural history of Belgrade.
