These bowl-shaped salt cellars were made of Portuguese coins minted in 1899. One of the vessels has the reverse side of the coin (with a coat of arms) on the top; below the coat of arms runs the inscription "1000 REIS". The other vessel has the obverse side of the coin (with the right profile of a man) on the top; around the image runs the inscription "CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL. 1899". The salt cellars rest on three feet featuring sculpted elephants.
