The banknote was issued in ravaged country during World War I. In spite of the war and destruction, Serbia was a rare country that managed to preserve the value of its money and reach the end of the war with an above average commodity backing of its currency. During the war, Serbia regularly paid its credit obligations in commodity backed currency even to its war enemy – Germany.

The inscriptions are bilingual: Serbian on the obverse and French on the reverse. The banknote was designed and printed at the printing office of the Bank of France. It remained in circulation all through to 1935.
